What Happens to a Woman After Tubal Ligation?
posted: May 23, 2023.
Your fallopian tubes are part of your reproductive system. When you have a tubal ligation, it’s commonly known as having your tubes tied. It’s a permanent solution to prevent pregnancy. Dr. Anya Rose and Dr. Megan Gau at Rose Women’s Health in Arcadia, CA, provide a wide range of women’s health services, including tubal ligation.
What You Need To Know About a Tubal Ligation
Before you consider tubal ligation, it’s important to be sure you don’t want to have any more children. Although a tubal ligation can be reversed, the procedure is expensive and doesn’t always work. Make sure you have a consultation with our OBGYN before you have a tubal ligation.
A tubal ligation procedure involves cutting and sealing off your fallopian tubes so your eggs cannot be fertilized by sperm. The fallopian tubes can be sealed with a special thread or blocked with a clasp or clamp.
The tubal ligation can be performed several different ways, including laparoscopically, which has the smallest incisions and the easiest recovery time, a mini laparotomy, or a laparotomy, which has the largest incisions and requires the longest recovery time.
After your procedure, you should avoid:
- Lifting anything heavy for 1 to 2 weeks
- Driving for at least 24 hours, or longer depending on the extent of surgery
- Drinking any alcohol for at least 24 hours
- Swimming or taking baths for at least two weeks
There are also some side effects that may occur after a tubal ligation. You may experience:
- Gas and bloating
- Abdominal swelling and pain
- Mild to moderate nausea
- Vaginal bleeding for up to one month
