What is the Loop Electrical Excision Procedure?

LEEP is short for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. This is a procedure performed to prevent cervical cancer. A small electrical wire loop is used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. This is an effective treatment for removing cells that could become cancerous.

How Does It Work?

A LEEP is usually performed after an abnormal pap smear result, once your doctor identifies that there are abnormal cells to treat. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the cervix and IV sedation can also be used. During the procedure, an electric current runs through a wire loop tool that helps your doctor remove the tissue in thin layers.

What Can I Expect?

A LEEP is a short procedure in our office. During a LEEP the abnormal tissues are removed and then biopsied for cancer. Patients can return home right away after a loop electrical excision procedure in Arcadia, CA. Not everyone experiences bleeding after the procedure, but medication can be prescribed to stop any bleeding. There is a brief recovery period of one to three days following the procedure and you can return to the office to review the results with your doctor.

The procedure is safe and effective but like with any procedure there is a small risk of complications, so talk to your doctor about any potential risk factors.
