HPV Testing Q & A

What is HPV and Should I Be Concerned to Have HPV?

HPV is the shorter name for human papillomavirus infection. There are more than 100 types of the virus. Genital HPV is spread through sexual contact, while other types of HPV are associated with infection in other areas of the body, such as on the face or feet. More than 3 million Americans contract HPV every year. It cannot be cured, but you can treat the symptoms of HPV. Vaccines are also available for some types of HPV as a preventive measure, including Gardasil, Gardasil-9, and Cervarix.

What are the Most Common Symptoms of HPV?

If you have genital HPV the most common symptom is warts in your genital area. If you have another type of HPV you may have warts on other parts of your body, such as plantar warts on the bottom of your feet. However, most of the time you will not show any signs of HPV. If left untreated certain types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer, as well as cancer of the vagina, vulva, or anus. It is important to note that often times, patients infected with HPV will not exhibit symptoms right away, if ever. Depending on a woman’s immune system, the body can fight off symptoms before they ever appear.

How Does Dr. Rose at Rose Women’s Health Treat HPV?

At Rose Women’s Health, Dr. Rose provides vaccines for the prevention of strains of genital HPV that are commonly associated with cervical cancer or genital warts. The vaccine is recommended for a girl as young as 11 or 12-years-old and as old as 26-years-old. As for treating existing HPV, Dr. Rose may use medications or surgical procedures to remove warts caused by HPV. However, as HPV cannot be cured, removing the warts is a temporary treatment since they may return. If you are concerned about having HPV, the best recommendation is to get checked. Rose Women’s Health can provide comprehensive STD testing for patients with any concerns regarding their sexual activity or history. Dr. Rose will work with you to provide secure and private STD testing that includes HPV testing to ensure your gynecological health and wellbeing.
