If you have been diagnosed with fibroids you will have lots of questions. Dr. Anya Rose and Dr. Megan Gau of Rose Women's Health in Arcadia, CA offer the women's health care services and information you require.

What Is a Fibroid?

A fibroid is a non-cancerous tumor that grows on or in the uterus. It is made up of connective tissue and muscle cells. About three-quarters of all women will have a fibroid, but not all will even know that they do. When there are no symptoms, the fibroids are usually discovered during a pelvis exam.

Symptoms of Fibroids

While not everyone will have any symptoms from one or multiple fibroids, some people will notice changes. You may have heavy periods or experience bleeding between periods, feel pressure in the pelvic area or pain during intercourse, feel the need to urinate frequently, or have trouble getting pregnant. Low back pain is also a common symptom.

Do I Need To Get a Fibroid Removed?

Whether or not you need to get a fibroid removed depends on how much it is affecting your life. If it is making getting pregnant difficult or causing issues during pregnancy, treatment may be required. If you are having an excessively heavy period, you need to get something done. For many people, no treatment will be required.

Will a Fibroid Affect My Fertility?

A possibility exists that a fibroid or fibroids may affect your ability to get pregnant. Depending on where in the uterus the tumor is located,  it may be responsible for miscarriage or early labor. If you are having difficulty with getting pregnant or remaining pregnant, you and your gynecologist can discuss what steps to take next.

Can a Fibroid Turn Into Cancer?

It is extremely rare for a fibroid to become cancerous. However, it is not unknown that a fibroid is cancerous from its beginning. You are not at greater risk of developing uterine cancer if you have fibroids.

Will My Fibroid Go Away?

When the estrogen level in the body decreases at menopause, it may cause the fibroids to shrink or go away altogether.

What Causes Fibroids?

There is no one cause for fibroids. It may be connected to the amount of estrogen that the body has. Genetics play a part in getting fibroids as well since they tend to run in families. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of developing a fibroid.
